Field Guides and Keys
Field guides and identification keys are essential for making good records.
There are many resources online and offline to help you with accurate identification, essential for biological recording. The searchable ID Signpost by the Field Studies Council (FSC) catalogues hundreds of these national resources by taxon group.
CBDC and Tullie House Museum have some keys which you may use in our offices by appointment. Contact our Recording Officer.
Local Wildlife ID guides including ferns, ladybirds, grasshoppers and shieldbugs as well as county checklists can be found on Carlisle Natural History Society’s public resource pages.
A good introduction to Recording is the NBN’s Darwin Guide to Recording Wildlife.
